About

I am an astrophotographer and landscape photographer based in Perthshire, Scotland, UK, Great Britain.

Dunnottar Castle, Scotland

I am a Landscape and Astrophotographer based in beautiful Perthshire, Scotland. My main areas of shooting interest are landscape and astrophotography, along with some wedding work which I used to do in higher volume (I am more selective about this work due to time constraints). I also work closely with Getty Images, providing commercial and editorial photography for clients around the world. My pictures are often featured in books, magazines, newspapers and online articles.

Every day we are bombarded by a never-ending stream of pictures; however very few of them can hold our attention for more than a couple of seconds at best. The value of the still image has been seriously eroded, however, I still strongly believe in it’s inherent value. It never used to be like this. We as photographers’ need to focus on quality over quantity like never before. We need to think like film photographers. There is a reason why so many of the great photographers have stated that they’d be happy if they create a dozen exceptional, truly unrepeatable photographs over their entire careers. I am still working on my 12.

The advent of Artificial Intelligence has truly been a blessing and a curse in this profession. Yes, it can help tidy up some image defects quicker than a manual process with good results, it can also assist complex masking etc; however it is being used to construct entirely fake images, and seems driven to please those on social media for likes and comments. ‘Artists’ are literally constructing images from typing what they want to appear in front of them into a text box. This has social and ethical problems associated with this practice, and even social media has recognised the need to ask users to label things made by AI going forward…I for one, vehemently reject this way of constructing pictures. We live in a world where big business’ and social media companies consider artists as mere ‘content’ creators, and now the advertising of products and services is channelled through these people. It used to be the heartless conglumerate that was trying to sell you things, but don’t worry, now it is your friend on Instagram; your buddy with the ultra high follower count! As many like minded photographers; I reject this whole process and attempt to diminish and commoditise what we do.

In contrast to the craziness I see in the photography world; I do not strip parts of images taken at different times and places and use them together, and I certainly do not use AI to produce fantasy pictures. Nearly everything, and every genre of this craft has been done to death. This in part, I believe, is pushing people to create more outrageous pictures to get noticed. I walk past pictures all the time in my travels as a landscape / astro photographer.  When crafting a picture I think of the Stanley Kubrick quote - ‘I never know what I want half the time; but I do know what I don’t want.’  I look for shape and form in everything that I do and I shoot in a very particular way because of it. I am a picture collector. Every single picture I display becomes an extension of how I see the world and space, but most importantly: what it makes me feel. There are many, many hours that go into the culmination of a definitive image, from conception to production.
