About

I am an astrophotographer and landscape photographer based in Perthshire, Scotland, UK, Great Britain.

Welcome to my little corner of the internet. I’m Steve; I am a Landscape and Astrophotographer based in beautiful Perthshire, Scotland. My main areas of expertise are landscape and astrophotography, along with wedding work which I used to do in much higher volume than I do now. (I am more selective about this work now due to time constraints). I also work closely with Getty Images, providing commercial and editorial photography for clients around the world. My pictures are often featured in books, magazines, newspapers and online articles.

Every day we are bombarded by a never-ending stream of pictures; however very few of them seem to have the ability to hold our attention for more than a couple of seconds at best. The value of the still image has been seriously eroded, however, I still strongly believe in it’s inherent value and impact when an exceptional example is presented to the viewer. Quality is therefore of the utmost concern to me. There is a reason why so many of the great photographers have stated that they’d be happy if they create a dozen exceptional, truly unrepeatable photographs over their entire careers. I am still working on my 12, because this is by definition a difficult area to reach.

The advent of Artificial Intelligence has truly been a blessing and a curse in this profession. AI can help tidy up some image defects quicker than a manual process with good results, it can also assist complex masking etc; however it is now being used to construct entirely fake images, and seems driven to please those on social media for likes and comments. This has social and ethical problems associated with this practice, and even social media platforms have recognized the need to ask users to label things made by AI going forward…I for one, vehemently reject this way of constructing pictures and like many I want no part in it.

I’d like to see photographers become more ethically responsible. I’d like to see more shoot images that actually resemble the planet we reside on! It is for this reason that I do not strip parts of images taken at different times and places and use them together; I do not use AI to produce fantasy pictures that never occured. Because the average person is exposed to such a vast number of pictures every single day, I believe this is pushing people to create more outrageous pictures, simply to try and get noticed. When crafting a picture I think of the Stanley Kubrick quote - ‘I never know what I want half the time; but I do know what I don’t want.’ I am a shooter that likes to maximise the technical side. In this game we call it ‘using up’. This concept asks if we attained the ultimate image quality for the shot; by using any parameter possible to make things better, from both a technical and artistic standpoint?

I look for shape and form in everything that I do and I shoot in a very particular way because of it. I am a picture collector. Every single picture I display becomes an extension of how I see the world and space, but most importantly: what it makes me feel. There are many, many hours that go into the culmination of a definitive image, from conception to production.
